I had a similar situation years ago where a girl suddenly hit the brakes hard in front of me when traffic slowed for a traffic light. I tapped her in back and it put 2 tiny indentations in the plastic bumper from the license plate screws.

It was a really new car so her dad wanted the cover re-sprayed to the tune of $600 so I just payed it. At the time, this was about 2 weeks salary.

I did some checking and if the claim had gone back to insurance, it would have cost me over $3000 in increased rates. Paying out of pocket hurt but in the end, I saved quite a bit.
