I do believe that Ümläüt has been abused by the previous owner.
Evidence of poor bodywork, oil thicker than blackstrap, "Meijer Brand" 10W-40 in the trunk, clutch slave cyl leaking so bad and for so long that it actually corroded the end off the cylinder shaft - they thought the clutch was goin' bad so they bought a new Sachs clutch kit and put it in the trunk. The reality is that the clutch was simply oil-fouled.
Now the best - I pulled the OEL cap off the IP and it's BONE FREAKING DRY
oh dear god I hope I saved it in time. I drove it no more than 5 miles before pulling the starter and replacing the vacuum pump (which appears to have been leaking for quite some time)
The starter was abused pretty badly - I pulled it apart hoping to put the armature on the lathe and clean up the commutator, but it's worn right through to the nubs and the bendix is fried as well.
I'm super worred about the IP, however. I'm not exactly sure how far to fill it up, there doesn't appear to be a weep plug for "full" indication. Any danger of being too full? Also, straight 30 weight?
