my 95 sl500 did the same thing and replacement of the coolant temp. sensor fixed problem but be very careful removing connector as the wiring insullation could have turned to powder and that might be the whole problem if the sensor does not resolve problem, can get sensor from allmercedes.com for around $28.00 ordered one day and got the next,they are in CA. I am in NC.
