If you want to learn, buy a proper service manual and read about how your engine actually works. Unless you understand that, all the tools and advice in the world won't help you.
Every problem is different - anecdotes can only get you so far. You've obviously got a problem that is not the "quick fix" type, so it's time to spend some money.
And FYI - there are help lines for techs, too, and the guys on the other end of the line aren't that reliable.
