I had this problem and after I changed the OVP Relay, Fuses, and Voltage Regulator in the Alternator, haven't seen it happen since. I have a 1991 300E. Others say it is the contacts behind the steering wheel and that spraying contact cleaner from the backside of the wheel could help it. A nice piece of black electrical tape works too!
