transmission removal procedure 1991 190E

Hi all!

I am in the process of trying to remove my automatic transmission from my 91 190E. 2.6L. I have a jack under the transmission and I disconnected the drive shaft and broken it free. I have unbolted the torque converter, and removed the exhaust hanger and rear transmission mount.

For the next step I was going to remove the bell housing bolts. I was going to do the hard ones first (the ones on the top) but I can't even get to them. Is there a trick for getting to the top bell housing bolts? I tried lowering the jack that is holding the transmission but it only goes down an inch or so.

I am under the assumption that I can take the transmission out without removing the engine as well, is this right? Should I loosen the engine mounts to get a little more movement and access to the bolts?

Thanks for the information!
