Hi Tina,
I'm new to MB's, having just purchased two 300E's last week. I have not removed the tranny from a MB yet, but I've removed it from many other cars, and yes, you can just remove the tranny. The upper bell housing bolts are usually the more difficult to remove, and on most of the other cars, I remove the rubber motor mounts of the engine, then let the engine rest on the frame, thus, giving you more clearance for the upper bell hous bolts. I have not looked at a 190, and it may not work on this car, but I thought I'd at least post to give you a possible solution. I sure someone with more knowledge on these cars will chime in soon...good luck.
