Tim McVeigh, IRA, NAZIs, KKK, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, et al? Neither terrorism nor Islam are homogeneous. More people who are or were terrorists have been non Muslim.

"Mistreatment of detainees" were the charges. 'Torture' never came up in the trials. The majority of convictions (four total) were 'failure to intervene.'

I was right, smack dab, in the middle of the 'Muslim world' when it all happened. Here's what happened. We found the families of the men pictured, paid them, apologized, drank some tea, took them home and it was over. Most of the ones NOT pictured are still locked up in other places. The Muslim world knew Saddam did much worse than the US Army did.
The National (paper of the UAE) even printed that it showed weakness when the US Army did not 'simply kill them [detainees.]'
What the New York Times never had the courage to print was, what bothered the Muslim world was it was NOT Arabs doing what white people were doing.
You can't group all Muslims in the same category. They are NOT a homogeneous group and blood feuds WITHIN ISLAM go on even today.
In case you never meet an Arab who trusts you enough to explain, "My brother and me against a cousin, my cousin and me against a stranger..." Here's the cultural order; 1. My family is more important than tribe. 2. My tribe is more important than sect. 3. My sect is more important than another sect. 4. Islam is more important than infidelity.
The detainees you saw on American TV were Shi'ite 'Mahdi Army' supporters of Muqtada Al-Sadr. The Sunni actually knew this beforehand and most of them didn't care. Some even approved. If you recall, the only boisterous protest came from Syria, Iran and parts of Lebanon. GCC countries didn't seem to say too much.
