Hate to be pessimistic.
But a free spinning HB on a Mercedes Diesel has been the death of many cars. You will have to pull it off and take a good look at the front or "nose" of the crankshaft. If that is all beat up, you will have to look for a replacement engine. You can find a lot about this problem if you do a search on the diesel side of the forum.
