That's a funny cost quote.
You can check for a faulty glow plug yourself. I just checked mine today. Diesel giant has a pictorial on how to check your glowplugs for an 86 300SDL .

There's the link. Go ahead and give it a check. It took me 10 minutes at best to see if my glow plugs were ok (they were).
