Sounds to me like vent flaps/arms with a second choice being the push button unit.
I second toomanyBNZ's viewpoint. I have just dealt with air flow issues sinec I have owned my 300SD. I am installing a nice uncracked dash at some point and will look into the dashpods and vent flaps at that time. I hope to fix it but have my doubts.
