Trouble is neither will reserve a Grand Marquis by make and model. I might get "or similar" which is okay as long as it's a Crown Vic or a Town Car. It seems Budget only has Grand Marquis in the particular price class I'm looking at, so it looks good for them.
I'm still not sure if I want to add an extra $600+ to what's already going to be an expensive trip.

I really think it would be false economy to try to take an old Benz that far vs. The Mercury rental. Imagine if you, for whatever reason, have a catastrophic mechanical failure on your trip. Towing and finding alternative wheels in the middle of a vacation would cost as much, probably more, than $600. And on top of that try to put a value on comfort and peace of mind.
