The issue is a rogue antivirus program on her computer.

Win32/Fakeinit

Her machine is running McAfee and the Microsoft Security Essentials.

* Safe mode fails, blue screen and reboot.
* Task Manager is locked out.
* REGEDIT is locked out.

I bought and installed MalwareBytes Saturday night.
More data later.
I have helped some neighbors with some malware like that recently. Basically whatever you open... That is the last time it will open. The software pretends to be a legitimate virus program, then trys to sell you the software to fix the problem.... All total BS.

You need to stop the malicious program from running before installing Mbam. Otherwise it is "all for not".

Download and run "Rkill". Be patient and let it finish. Ignore any pop ups from the malware. You may need to run Rkill multiple times to stop the malicious process. This little program will stop the malicious process and allow you run Mbam and deal with the problem. Be sure to update Mbam before running it. Performing the "quick scan" is enough.
