A few possibilities would ba a O319 Mercedes bus from 1956 to 1968, these could have the small windows in the sides of the roof like a VW bus, or a MB L 306 or 206 from 1970 through 1977. Both of these you will see on occasion in the US converted to a camper van.

ps These were available in Diesel or gas, the Diesel version would have a "D" at the end of the model name ie O 319 D, the engine would be a 4 cylinder Diesel, so it's look a little like the 240D motor to the untrained eye. i have a picture on a disc of a 319 with the cloth sliding sunroof, don't know how common this was.
The O319 has a more rounded front end, round headlights, the 306/206 has a more squared off appearance with rectangular lights.
