Just did this a few weeks back.
Remove exhaust section to get to see steering box Easy.
Bend back heatshield and inspect,just to get a visual of the lines..
For me i removed hi and low side hoses,which you should consider since you are there/You will figure the rest from there.
So for me heat shield looked impossible but was not that bad.There is a small opening in heat shield to remove hoses.All in all sounds easy but takes a bunch of time.This was on a 1994 E-420...With both hoses in hand never did find where leak was.Think it was hi side hose
