If the infrastructure was in place, electric vehicles can be refueled as quickly as gas/diesel. Dump charging puts a huge amount of power in in one shot, and can bring the battery pack to 85% charge in 30seconds or so.
A true serial hybrid is a good compromise until then, an electric car with a diesel generator onboard to handle continued cruise.
