The best tool to have is the hook tools that are used to remove instrument clusters on later model MB's. You can slip one underneath the IDC as it is properly called (In-Dash Controller) and also use a thin blade, a butter knife would work, to release 2 small latches on the under side of the IDC, releasing one side then the other. It'll pull out pretty easily, even if you have to use what's readily available. It won't put up much of a fight.
