This was the Mercury launch control center you were looking at. Really looks downright primitive. I wouldn't want to risk my life based on readings from that junk...but that's what they had in the early 60's. Talk about the right stuff- you needed it then....

My dad worked for GE in Daytona on the Apollo program in the 60s. I can remember a visit to KSC for some event in the 60s when we got to go into the VAB. Later, I got to view the Apollo-Soyuz launch up close...cool.
