Word I read is that high mucky mucks of the day who had sizeable numbers of available concubines would become weak and depleted owing to over-frequent ejaculation (poor babies). But with this method they could save their seed for only the events when the woman was in heat and the pregnancy was desired. And be vigorous enough to pull the whole thing off, kingdom and all.
