well, I also considered refinishing, but found one on ebay that was refinished. It was a real professional job. Make sure the switch configuration matches exactly because they are not all the same. I bid on mine and got it for $55. Usualy they are $75-$100. But to answer your question, I think you can do it yourself. It looked like the old varnish would come off with patience and the right chemicals
