I recall they made the steering wheel so big in case the power steering failed the driver could still maneuver the car. And being good German engineers they surely designed to the worst case tolerance, probably a frail old woman.

I'll probably do a Nardi wood wheel as well but will be a bummer not to see the speedo or the gas gauge (though you always know you need gas in these cars!).
