I can't tell you the specific differences between the XX in 722.3XX transmissions, but all 124-installed 722.3xx transmissions are "interchangeable". However:

There are different gear ratios (although AFAIK all are 1:1 4th gear)
There are different stall speeds
There are different shift-points
And very noticable; only the diesels and M104 cars had 1st-gear start, the others start in 2nd gear unless you select low or floor it.

Of course that means the '87 diesel (OM603) as the later diesels have the weaker 722.4xx transmission with the 5cylinder engine (not sure on the '95 though).

Biggest difference you'll see if you use a 300E transmission on a diesel is the higher stall speed and 2nd-gear start being a real buzz-kill on take off.
