Only buy WHITE towels and not colored towels because the dye may leave a chemical residue on the paint. And of course, wash the towels before using. Use Liquid detergent (don't use Bleach or any fabric softener). Run the rince cycle twice to make sure all detergent come out.

I fold the towel in a way that the the hard edges do not touch the paint. If you want to play safe, you can cut the borders off but the towel will start to fray a little. If you want, you can re-sew it with 100% cotton thread to avoid fraying.
