My tell tale sign in my W126 was when I would accelerate past 40 it wouldn't feel too nice, and a steady vibration if you hold the shifter nob.

FWIW, I think it doesn't look like a DO IT NOW type of thing; but then again, mine literally fell into strands when I looked at it.
