That is because he influenced music and the world so much, its hard to find a modern musician or group ranging from U2 to Bruce Springsteen that does not openly admit that Joe Strummer and The Clash were their biggest influence.
The Clash did not get the only band that matters title for nothing, the invented ska, made punk tolerable to the masses and last but not least....helped kill disco.
