I've used high temp bearing grease before without problems. They should have tubes of the "proper" stuff at the big box parts stores. Use GREASE, I wouldn't use the gummy/rubbery stuff.
Just put a film of it on the flat sliding areas, don't goober it all up.
Real key to having quiet brakes is to make sure you get them bedded in right away after the brake job, go out and really nail them hard a couple times til the "rumbling" sensation is gone.
