I think that one was a 47 mm, so I used something a bit larger than 1-3/5, which is about 45mm.
I drained one maybe 20 years ago, when large metric allen wrenches and such tools were dealer only or Germany only.

My plan was essentially the same.
Take a bolt with the same head size then take a cheap(broken most likely, they go hand in hand) 1/2 in drive socket and put it over the threaded end of the bolt and weld. Then again i could just go with the nuts on the threaded end...
