My 91' F700 gets between 11-12.5mpg with a 93' 12 valve cummins in it , 5spd Eaton transmission and 2spd rear axle. Weighs in at 19,500 lbs empty.

My friend just got a new duramax with all the emissions crap on it and averages 22mpg.

On the gas Chevy maybe a 4.8 but the 5.3 and 6 liter are thirsty engines. The older 350's where even worse. My TBI motor gets 12 when empty and about 6 when pulling something. Reliable as hell but really thirsty.
