Replacing rear shock assembly

I am replacing my rear shocks and coil springs on my 98 ml 320. It seems you need to drop the rear A frame assembly. It is easier to take it off at the rear ball joint, or remove the 2 bolts holding the A frame? If you remove the ball joint do you need to press it back in place? The two A frame bolts seem easier to remove. Any advise on which way is easier ,or is there another way to get the shock and coil spring unit out?
