I'd ask the shop if they can figure out if the injection timing and ignition timing are correct.
Might be on to something in regards to the flywheel or flex plate being incorrect for that engine. If the segments on the flywheel are not correct for the injection (ME-SFI) computer, the injection might be all wrong. One commenter suggested trying a bit of starting fluid to see if the engine will try to run. Which is a good thing to at least try, it tells you the engine is capable of running if the fuel is available. If it doesn't even try to run on that, or you get backfiring, it tells you that the spark is out of time. Which to me would more relate to the cam timing, but it's hard to tell.
