While I would also join the USAF and had encouraged my son to do so (my FIL is a retired Air Force Captain) and we had talked about how the Air Force would probably base him in the USA or Germany and the chances of going to the sandbox were slim.

I have to offer my respect and gratitude to your son.

I know a retired Gunney and he is the most gung-ho person I know. He once stayed up for 48 hours working in the computer room I was managing just to prove he could still do it I had to give him a 'DIRECT ORDER' to go home!
When 9-11 happened, he RAN from the data center to the World Trade Center to help even as the buildings were still coming down
He is now in Guam working as a contractor for the USAF and he thinks the fly-boys have is EASY compared to the Leathernecks!

The Marines might be the toughest branch of the service to be in, but it is worth it for what you get out of it.
