This week I have to think about the overdrive problem, which is not eliminated as I hoped. It won't stay in overdrive all the time, but works perfectly in every other gear. Pretty irritating as overdrive was the whole point of this complex swap! The most annoying part is that all the cross chassis risks I took matching 240 and 190 parts together have resulted in success, and the problem is now completely unrelated to the swap itself! Hopefully this weekend I can shed some light on it.

Ive found problems with the stick apparatus, and also with a second stick apparatus, but Im not sure if those issues have any bearing on whats happening here. Popping out of gear would have to be an internal transmission problem, which means I may have to take the back of the transmission apart. Fortunately, that can be done on the car, but it may have to come out if I find something further.

I am disassembling my 717.412 and comparing it to the reassembly pics of the 717.411 thats in the car. Hopefully its all in the stick.

I cannot believe how complex the stick apparatus is, more complex than the entire transmission! Parts may have to be ordered for that as well.
I already have a Euro '84 300TD with a factory 5-speed and a decent '82 240D with a 4-speed manual, but I'm very interested in your 240D - W201 5-speed conversion.

Other than linkage/overdrive issues, is the W201 5-speed a direct bolt-up to the 240D 616 motor & clutch?
If the 240D already has a 4-speed manual, will the 5-speed need driveshaft modification?
Also, which W201 5-speed - 190E or D - did you use?
Or do those use the same tranny? Thanks.

Happy Motoring, Mark
