Sounds like the timing chain tensioner has failed.

IF the timing chain jumped you will have a broken valve cover on the drivers side. (not good).

If the chain hasn't jumped???!!! disconnect the "green" wire from the distributor at the ignition BOX & crank the engine for 20-30 seconds & see if the tensioner will pump back up.
