Well, the G35's big torquey 3.5 liter V6 definitely helped bring it out on top of the Bimmer in the July '02 Road and Track sport sedan comparison test. That, and the lower pricepoint. If Infiniti could offer a destroked version (maybe 4.0 liters and 300 hp) of the Q45's 4.5 liter V8 and make a G40 with a 6-speed manual priced at under $45K, BMW would stand to lose some sales.

Also, the G35 is based off the Nissan Skyline platform. It's got performance credentials right there.
