It's likely the top bracket next to the bottom of the window is broken. After it breaks it pivots so that the window operates normally but leaves an inch gap. You may need to replace the assembly even if the motor is good.

If you are handy, you can find a good used cable/frame assembly and transfer the motor. It's a little tricky because you have to get the motor cable positioned correctly. The sedan rear assembly may work as it's very close but the motor orientation may have some interference.
