These are the lines leading to the vacuum pods under the dash. If the recirculation pod leaks, it will constantly draw outside air in mass quantities, nullifying the refrigeration system.
Just did mine on a '91 420 SEL. On mine you would also need to remove the carpeted piece on the right side of the console. Runs from the console to the fire wall. One bolt near where the passengers left foot would be. Found four of the six pods shot. You can pop them apart and see the deterated rubber bits.
