Car is much better now. Less body roll, much more 'feel' of the front wheels, more stability.
The nearside (that's the kerb side, to those of us in the UK who of course drive on the correct side of the road

) shock was knackered, a lifetime of hitting drain covers and potholes left it with hardly any resistance. The offside shock was much better, but still far from perfect.
An easy job, just takes brute force and a bit of preparation.
By the way if an admin wants to move this to a permanent DIY guide, feel free to save the photographs and host them yourself, they're all public domain and I release any copyright on them.
Oh and obviously this is front shocks only, the rears will be a similar process but I haven't yet done those. Gotta fix a lot of rust first!
