Don't know that it's any safer, but it's always hotter and prettier..... by pre-ordering a vegetarian meal, I generally get best available and on most airlines get fed first .

Absolute best food is on Cathay Pacific - excellent every single time. Malaysian Air is usually quite good. Flew Qatar Airways last time, and their food was ok-ish. US airlines are consistently pretty dang bad to just plain awful. Especially love it when they're bringing the little sandwich bag lunches around and I ask for my vegetarian meal - and they say "you can take the ham off one of the sandwiches." Right - and have a pig juice tainted chunk of stale white bread for lunch - no thanks!
