try removing the actual interior lever to get to the "cable"... then pull from there with a vice grip or something...

...this runs the risk of "stretching" the cable though if there is already a frayed section of cable somewhere along the line... i remember reading people accessing the latch mechanism through the grille (potential damage)... dont know the specifics though, and pretty sure its not for a w220... as i hang out in the diesel forum, w140 and w124 forums(elsewhere)
