Cheaper and lighter. Manufacturers go for both. Cheap for obvious reasons. Lighter to get better gas mileage and boost their overall fleet mileage results. Apparently SUVs are "trucks" and don't count against fleet mileage results.

There are certain laws that state manufacturers must meet certain fleet mileage ratings by certain dates. CAFE is the acronym I think.
