I think it has to do with personality type. Everyone familiar with MBTI or Meyer-Briggs?? The more feeling types, vs. thinking types, will tend to be more emotionally connected, and thus name their car. And they get all fussy about it. OMG!!

I would have never thought of naming a machine, although wifey calls mine my german girlfriend because I spend more time with the car than her.

But yeah, whatever. I think it's a bit effeminate.
These same people probably name their privates too.
