Geez that's a lot of money. Yes, take it back. We don't want to say 'rip-off' and hurt your feelings.
IRCC my last one went out and I installed a new compressor and R/D, orings, about $350. AC service place evac'd and tested for leaks, charged with R134, for about $200. Worked great. But that was about 13 years ago.
I read somewhere recently the Germans didn't know how to make air conditioning back then because it's not hot there. Had to laugh. Mine have had AC Delco compressors.
