W123 Weird Blower Motor Behavior

Hi Everyone,

I have spent the whole morning looking for an answer to my problem, and none of the threads I have found exactly match my problem. I finally got the A/C working in my car, (kept it R-12), but there seems to be a problem with the blower motor speed control. The high and low buttons always work no matter what mode or temperature is selected on the PBU. Once the interior temps cool down to a comfortable level, I set the temperature at 22C and push the "Auto" button on the fan speed control. It sounds to me that the blower then slows down slightly from the previous manual "High" setting. It continues to work at that speed for a few minutes and then the blower turns off completely, at which point I need to select either the "High" or "low" manual buttons to turn it back on. When the blower happens to cut out at idle, I can tell that the compressor is still engaged and cold air will continue to trickle through the vents if the car is in motion. Also, if I leave the climate control in the manual "high" position for a few minutes and then select "Auto" again, the blower works fine but at a much lower speed and gives me no further problems.

It seems to me as if some of the more medium fan speeds are "dead" but I do not know how to test for this and I certainly do not want to buy a new climate control part as they all seem to be more than $100 until I have a better idea as to what may be wrong. Thanks for reading and your help in advance!
