A turbo would only help above ~2700 rpm.

Diesels are slow off the line (hell, they are slow all thru the RPM range).

A turbo and non-turbo motor are different internally. A turbo motor has beefed up connecting rods and such to accomodate the higher stresses a turbo adds.

If you add a turbo, expect to shorten your engine life dramatically.
