THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.
The loss of one freedom, no matter how insignificant, is the loss of all freedoms. Let's say the government here banned the mullet, and people just kind of laughed at it, and went along because seriously the mullet is a joke. But now the government sees that people will swallow stupid laws like that, and it's a pretty quick downhill slope to requiring written permission (in triplicate) to take a dump.
Even if you think a freedom is as insignificant as having your choice of hair style, you need to be willing to defend it.
