Did you ever sort this out? The reason I ask and the reason I posted above was this.....

I had a similar problem. The brushes were worn down some and not making good contact with the slip ring. They were not worn out, just worn down. I simply cut some thin pieces of cardboard from a Mich Light 12 pack container and "shimmed behind" the brush springs. 6 little pieces on each side did the trick.

Doing this along with lubing the bushing/bearings fixed the problem.
