A few years back I went through this; I just wanted a simple dishwasher that was about $500-$600, would be reliable, and not come with a thousand pushbutton gadgets that I'd never use. ConsumerRep suggested the Kenmore with QuiteGuard 3, and IIRC the more you pay the quieter they are.

Here's the current CR models in order of overall score:

Bosch SHX43P1[2]UC, $800

You can research those and see which ones you like. The pricier ones are $1200-$1500, but if you hang around an old MB site, you probably like "bang for the buck".
