TOPGUN gives a great explanation. All I can add is that in this situation with an unflushed system, adding oil even for a seasoned a/c pro is nothing but a guessing game.

If you didn't replace a component, then one or two ounces will probably be okay unless you had an oily mess where you repaired the leak, then your guessing game might need a little extra added.
