If the windshield is really wet, it works OK? Will the wiper blade move all the way if you "help" it? Just wondering if there is a mechanical problem in the transmission or some dry bearings.

My '87 300D Turbo (W124, OM603) started making a ticking noise while on a rainy-day trip. Turned out one of the four bolts securing the wiper assembly had started to back out and was being struck by the linkage every time the arm rotated. Tightening the bolt fixed the problem.
