I wouldn't mess with that if I were you... unless you drive in the snow or something. The center carrier bearing is sealed so that boot only "protects" the part of the spline that is exposed.
I misplaced my boot when I did the 5spd swap. I just smeared some grease on the exposed spline.
If I find the boot I will put it back on.. maybe
